Saints 18U and Pittsburgh All Tied Up

Nick Smith scored his second goal of the game with 46 secomds remaining and the goaltender pulled to help the Saints 18U to a 3-3 tie in game 2 between the Saints and the Pittsburgh Viper Stars.  Again the Saints fell behind in the first period when a mishandled puck turned into an own goal while on the power play.  The Saints battled back when Nick Smith scored a power play goal at the midway mark of the second period.  Pittsburgh regained the lead with a power play goal of their own.  With the clock running down in the second period, Jake Zimmer was able to push one by the Pittsburgh goaltender to even the score at 2-2.  The third period saw Pittsburgh score their second shorthanded goal of the game to take a 3-2 lead and open the door for Smith's second goal.  Brandon Mueller finished the game with 32 saves.

The tie puts the season record at 7-1-2.  The Saints 18U and 16U travel to Pittsburgh this coming weekend for the Pittsburgh Viper Stars AAA Shootout.  The schedule for both teams is posted below.

Saints Take Game 1 Against Pittsburgh

The Buffalo Saints 18U hosted the Pittsburgh Viper Stars today at the Nichols School and came away with a 3-1 victory.  The game featured a great pace from the start with both goaltenders playing well.  Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the first with two minutes remaining in the period when a defensive miscue left a player alone on the back post for the easy tap in.  The second saw both teams trade scoring opportunities, but newither team could put one in the net.  The Saints began to take over the game in the third period and were rewarded when Nick Smith scored on a rebound.  Charlie Stein netted the eventual gamewinner when he deflected a Derek Marks shot past the Pittsburgh goaltender.   Jack Faso sealed the game with an empty net goal with just over a minute to play.  Brandon Mueller finished the game with 22 saves.

The same two teams meet again on Sunday, September 26 at 11:15am at Nichols.
